September 19 - Hudson & Manhattan Railway chartered

H&M and Pennsylvania Railroad agree on "joint service" operation to Newark

December 28 - First test train operates from Hoboken, NJ to Morton St., New York City (NYC) and returns

January 2 - Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Experimental Service begins from Hoboken to Christopher Street, NYC
February 25 - Service begins between Hoboken, NJ and 19th Street, NYC
June 15 - Service begins 19th Street to 23rd Street in NYC

March 21 - Special "Ladies Only" Car introduced
June 29 - H & M Experimental service begins from Hoboken, NJ to Cortland Street, NYC (Hudson Terminal)

September 6 - Service begins from Exchange Place to Grove Street
October 10 - Service begins 23rd Street to 33rd Street
November 1 - Experimental Service begins between 23rd Street and 28th Street

November 23 - Official train from Hudson Terminal, NY to Park Place, Newark, NJ
November 26 - Service begins between Manhattan Transfer and Newark
November 28 - Regular train service begins between Hudson Terminal and Newark

November 18 - Additional platform at Pavonia opened

March 6 - Harrison Station opens to the public
November 17 - H & M begins carrying U.S. mail between Hudson Terminal and Manhattan Transfer

December 31 - H&M's busiest year: 113,141,729 passengers

January 5 - Tower "WR" at JSQ opens; located west of Platform 4.

December 26 - 33rd Street Station closed for rebuilding; moved one block south

November 10 - New 33rd Street station opens to the public

June 26 - H&M switches from accepting cash fares to using fare tokens

August 1 - 19th Street Station closed
August 11 - H&M files bankruptcy petition
December 14 - Herman T. Stichman appointed bankruptcy trustee of H&M

August 31 - Experimental air-conditioned car in service

July 1 - Inauguration of World's 1st Air Conditioned Fleet - K Cars

May 10 - The Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation is chartered by law
September 1 - The Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation assumes control of the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad

February 1 - First three PA-1 cars arrive on property
April 8 - Inauguration of service of PA-1 cars

December 12 - Henderson St. entrance to Grove St. station closed

February 1 - Inauguration of service of PA-2 cars

July 6 - PATH's World Trade Center Terminal opens

October 16 - Designation of PATH tunnels as a National Engineering Landmark

June 30 - PATH acquires ownership of the Hackensack River Bridge

September 13 - Dedication of PATH's new Exchange Place station
December 6 - First Metro Vision Patron Video Information monitors at the World Trade Center

February 14 - PATH's new Pavonia/Newport Station opens
October 24 - Dedication of Harrison Car Maintenance Facility

August 14 - New car wash opens at Waldo Yard, Jersey City

October 27 - Direct weekend Hoboken-World Trade Center service introduced

July 1 - PATH wins top APTA prize for heavy rail system
December 1 - PATHVISION In-station Broadcast System installed by PATH
December 15 - Consolidated Maintenance Shop opens

2001
September 11 - World Trade Center Station destroyed and Exchange Place Station closed as a result of terrorist attacks

2002
September - PATH wins APTA's 2001 Outstanding Achievement Award for system serving over 30 million passengers per year

2003
Building of World Trade Center temporary station, rehabilitation of Exchange Place Station, construction of additional entrances at Grove Street, Christopher Street, and 9th Street stations
June - Exchange Place Station reopens
November - Temporary World Trade Center Station opens
New turnstiles and installed in all stations. PATH begins to accept NYC's MetroCard as a form of payment

2005
May - New Grove Street Station entrance opens

2006
Introduction of new PATH SmartLink electronic fare card
New vending machines installed in all stations

Looking Ahead
2008 - PATH new fleet of PA-5 railcars, which will completely replace PATH existing fleet of cars, will begin to arrive.
