The Port of New York and New Jersey is in the midst of
an extensive redevelopment to increase its handling capacity.
All of our major terminal operators feature new, high capacity
Post-Panamax
cranes, new gate systems and improved berths. Across
the Port, berths have been strengthened and deepened to
45/50 feet.
At Maher Terminals, 3,500 feet of wharf have been rebuilt
and three berths have been deepened to 50 feet; at
APM Terminals, 2,500 feet of wharf have been rebuilt and
two )
berths have been deepened to 45 feet; at PNCT,
total wharf length has been increased to over 5,000 feet
and
two
berths
have been deepened to 50 feet, and at Howland
Hook, the
wharf has
been extended by the addition of 500 feet to accommodate
berthing of three vessels simultaneously. By December 2006,
one berth will be
deepened to 45 feet.
Along with new storing and stacking
technologies and the new equipment that has been introduced
throughout the
port, we are working hard to expedite the throughput
of cargo at our terminals. Maher
Terminals has consolidated
its two
terminals Fleet Street and Tripoli Street in to a single
445-acre terminal with direct access to the expanded ExpressRail
Elizabeth.
APM Terminals has
added 84 acres to its terminal, bringing its total acreage
to 350, providing the terminal with direct
on-dock rail access to ExpressRail as well. This consolidation
will afford higher efficiency, and greater versatility
for both terminal operators. Port
Newark Container Terminal has recently undergone an expansion, increasing its total
facility size to 175 acres, allowing for the greater efficiency
of loading and unloading cargo.
