Project Description
In the aftermath of 9/11, the station was not in operation because it could not function as a train terminal (trains could not enter from one tunnel and exit from another). In addition, the existing platforms could only accommodate seven cars. Rock tunneling and the installation of crossover tracks west of Exchange Place Station to enable trains to reverse direction. Platforms were extended to allow for future 10-car trains

Features
Note:

  • New switches enabling the station to function as a terminal
  • Service was restored to Exchange Place prior to the completion of the new temporary station at the WTC site and the connecting tunnels were rehabilitated, in order to improve access to Lower Manhattan as quickly as possible
  • Connections with ferry service to New York City
  • Direct fixation of track to concrete trackbed to improve ride quality
  • Updated signalization and communications systems to provide a high level of passenger safety
  • Expanded platforms to accommodate 10-car trains

Status
PATH service to the station was restored on June 29, 2003.
